  6.     As the advertisement in BYTE magazine said, "Imagine a 
  7. setting in which communal wisdom is on tap.  A place that has the 
  8. fit and feel of a small, friendly town, yet the sophistication 
  9. and resources of a global community.  One which you can visit 
  10. electronically--to increase your knowledge of computers and their 
  11. applications, hone your skills, share insights with thousands of 
  12. other computer pros, and have fun."  Such is the Byte Information 
  13. eXchange, or BIX, as it is known.
  14.  
  15.     BIX is a flat-fee subscription, on-line information 
  16. service.  There is a $156 annual fee, billed $39 quarterly.  
  17. Telecommunications charges are extra.  You may buy off-peak 
  18. access via Tymnet at $20 per month or $3 per hour, or you may buy 
  19. peak access at $6 per hour (available only in the 48 contiguous 
  20. states).  Various special interest conferences and vendor support 
  21. conferences are available as well as personal BIXmail.

  23.     You may subscribe directly through your computer and 
  24. modem.  Set your program for full duplex, 7 bits, even parity, 
  25. and 1 stop bit.  Call BIX on their registration-only line:  800-
  26. 225-4129.  In MA call 617-861-9767.  International:  
  27. NU1310690157800.  At the prompt, "login:" you enter BIX.  At the 
  28. second prompt, "name:" you enter BIX.VILLE.

  30.     In August of 1987 Quarterdeck launched its DESQview 
  31. conference on BIX.  Technical support can be obtained by entering 
  32. "join DESQview" at the BIX ":" prompt. Although the conference 
  33. name is "DESQview", please note that all of our Quarterdeck 
  34. products are supported on BIX. Likewise personal BIXmail can be 
  35. sent to the moderator of the DESQview conference whose BIXname is 
  36. "QOS.REP2."  Upon joining the DESQview conference you will see 
  37. the topic areas you may choose from within the conference:

  39. Topics are: 'digest', 'bulletins', 'comments', 'tech', 'user'.
  40. Also: 'cbix', 'listings'.

  57.     Perhaps one of the nicest and most useful features of BIX 
  58. is its "search" command.  Subscribers that join our DESQview 
  59. conference can do a "search" within any topic area.  For example, 
  60. let's say that a user just purchased a Northgate computer with an 
  61. Adaptec hard disk controller.  At the BIX prompt, enter "search 
  62. northgate". Here's a sample (actually taken from the conference)

  118. Northgate provides a driver - ADAPTEC.DVR (DRV?) - with their 
  119. system but do not normally install it and there is little or no 
  120. mention of it in their documentation.  I talked to tech support 
  121. about it and I didn't understand exactly what it does, but it's 
  122. something like this - the Adaptec controller has some 
  123. intelligence built in to drive a wide variety of disk drives but 
  124. make them all look like a Type 1 to the CMOS (or something like 
  125. that). The ADAPTEC.DRV (DVR?) either defeats or enables this 
  126. intelligence. Oh well -even though the technical details escaped 
  127. me, the bottom line is that some programs (MACE+ utilities among 
  128. them) REQUIRE that driver to be installed to work properly with 
  129. an Adaptec controller.  I don't know of any others specifically, 
  130. but I suspect that any programs doing anything tricky with disk 
  131. I/O may run into problems if the driver is not installed.

  133. I don't know of any programs that won't run with the driver 
  134. installed, so you might find the file and include 
  135. DEVICE=ADAPTEC.DVR (DRV?) IN .More.. your CONFIG.SYS file.
